Introduction to the course
Chinese Language 102 is a continuation of 101. It aims at introducing
sentence structures and vocabularies that enable learners to express and
compare ideas and concepts of specific events in daily life. It emphasizes
the training of all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and
writing) as well as understanding the sociolinguistic and sociocultural
factors that are important to cross-cultural communication. However, the
focus of the course will be more on developing discourse rather than
sentences. Students are also encouraged to achieve independent thinking and
creative use of the language. Cooperative learning is part of the learning
process and experience.
Upon successful accomplishing the course, the students are expected to be
able to know 200 more characters and related phrases, to develop
comprehension of everyday topics and simple authentic materials.
The textbooks used include Integrated Chinese Textbook, Exercises Book,
Character Book, and other handouts.

Ground Rules
- Students are evaluated according to their overall performance. Students
are encouraged to communicate with the professor concerning their academic
achievement.
- All class assignments have to be handed in on time scheduled. Delayed
homework will only be corrected but not graded without a legitimate reason.
- Class attendance is 10% of the total grade. Should a student miss 5
lectures, all 10 points will be deducted. If an absence is unavoidable, the
instructor or the department should be notified before the class.
- The department's statement on academic honesty:
"Pursuit of truth is the prime activity in a university. As a member of this
community each student pledges to maintain standards of honesty and
integrity in all academic work. Students must rely exclusively upon their
own knowledge when taking a test. Failure to comply to these standards will
result in a failing grade."
- If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic
accommodations, please contact me within the first week of classes.
