Introduction to the course

Chinese Language 102 is a continuation of 101. It aims at introducing sentence structures and vocabularies that enable learners to express and compare ideas and concepts of specific events in daily life. It emphasizes the training of all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) as well as understanding the sociolinguistic and sociocultural factors that are important to cross-cultural communication. However, the focus of the course will be more on developing discourse rather than sentences. Students are also encouraged to achieve independent thinking and creative use of the language. Cooperative learning is part of the learning process and experience.

Upon successful accomplishing the course, the students are expected to be able to know 200 more characters and related phrases, to develop comprehension of everyday topics and simple authentic materials. The textbooks used include Integrated Chinese Textbook, Exercises Book, Character Book, and other handouts.

Ground Rules

  1. Students are evaluated according to their overall performance. Students are encouraged to communicate with the professor concerning their academic achievement.
  2. All class assignments have to be handed in on time scheduled. Delayed homework will only be corrected but not graded without a legitimate reason.
  3. Class attendance is 10% of the total grade. Should a student miss 5 lectures, all 10 points will be deducted. If an absence is unavoidable, the instructor or the department should be notified before the class.
  4. The department's statement on academic honesty: "Pursuit of truth is the prime activity in a university. As a member of this community each student pledges to maintain standards of honesty and integrity in all academic work. Students must rely exclusively upon their own knowledge when taking a test. Failure to comply to these standards will result in a failing grade."
  5. If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact me within the first week of classes.
