Starting Pine on Orion
Log onto Orion, then start PINE
From Windows NT/XP, etc., machines at Loyola:
- Click on Start.
- Click on Loyola Software.
- Click on Internet Tools.
- Click on SSH/Telnet Client.
- Click on the QuickConnect button.
- Type in "orion.it.luc.edu" for the hostname.
- Type in your Orion id for the username.
- Click on the Connect button.
- Enter your Orion password. You will be placed into your home directory on Orion.
- Type "pine" at the Orion command line prompt. The PINE program will start up.
- After you "quit" out of PINE, PLEASE LEAVE ORION BY TYPING "exit" AT THE ORION PROMPT UNTIL THE TEXT CHANGES FROM BLACK TO GREY. This shows that you have truly logged out of ORION itself.
From Windows machines located off-campus:
- You will need to use a secure terminal client to connect to Orion. If you don't already have one available on your workstation, there are some available on the web that you may download for free.
- We have had good results with PuTTY, an SSH client for Windows.
- The name of the terminal program to download is: "putty.exe".
- Putty.exe is ready-to-run and can be in any directory--for example, in the "Program Files" directory of NT. You can create a shortcut icon to the program and place it on your desktop. Or, select "Start", "Run" to start it. You may even start it from a DOS command prompt.
- When PuTTY starts, the Configuration Screen opens:
- Type in "orion.it.luc.edu" for the Host Name.
- BE SURE to click on SSH for the Protocol!
- Type a name for your session--e.g., "Orion", and click the "Save" button.
- From now on, simply start PuTTY, highlight the session name ("Orion") AND click on the "Load" and "Open" buttons.
- Next, enter your Orion id and password to connect.
- After you successfully log into Orion, you will be placed into your home directory on Orion.
- Type "pine" at the Orion command line prompt. The PINE program will start up.
- After you "quit" out of PINE, PLEASE LEAVE ORION BY TYPING "exit" AT THE ORION PROMPT UNTIL YOUR SESSION CLOSES. This insures that you have truly logged out of ORION itself, rather than just leaving the terminal program.
- NOTE: In the past, the TeraTerm Pro program, with the TTSSH Secure Shell extension, has been used to connect to Orion. However, it has known security holes. We do NOT recommend the use of TeraTermPro.
From Macintosh machines located off-campus:
- You will need to use a secure terminal client to connect to Orion. If you don't already have one available on your workstation, here are two that you may download as "freeware":
- After you successfully log into Orion, you will be placed into your home directory on Orion.
- Type "pine" at the Orion command line prompt. The PINE program will start up.
- After you "quit" out of PINE, PLEASE LEAVE ORION BY TYPING "exit" AT THE ORION PROMPT UNTIL YOUR SESSION CLOSES. This insures that you have truly logged out of ORION itself, rather than just leaving the terminal program.
